You, Me & the LRTP

2035 is a long way from now or so it seems. We learn from the past, live in the present and plan for the future. 2035 is that future or the planning horizon year for which an important project that affects us all is just getting underway: the update to our Long – Range Transportation Plan (LRTP).

So, what exactly is it and why should you care? Well, for starters, it means MONEY, from the Feds, to make our transportation system (all modes) work effectively and efficiently, to get people and goods, in Anchorage and Chugiak-Eagle River, where they need to be and when they need to be there. It also means CLEAN AIR and quality of life as the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) in charge of updating the Plan, AMATS (Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions), must review and update the LRTP at least every four years and perform an air quality conformity analysis for the Anchorage Bowl and Chugiak-Eagle River.

The plan will combine current Anchorage Bowl and Chugiak-Eagle River long-range transportation plans into a new Anchorage 2035 Long-Range Transportation Plan.  The consolidated LRTP will be compliant with the Safe Accountable Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU). WHEW, that’s a whole lot of acronyms in one project! Easy right? Yes, sort of. Your voice will be needed throughout the coming year as the Plan is updated to reflect changing transportation needs in our community.

2011 HSTC Quarterly Meetings

The following dates have been identified for the 2011 quarterly Human Service Transportation Coordination Meetings:

10 March 2011
9 June 2011
8 September 2011
8 December 2011

All meetings are held at the Public Transportation Department at 3650 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Avenue; unless otherwise noted. Transportation providers and organizations serving seniors, people with disabilities, youth & other vulnerable populations interested in coordinating resources to maximize travel options should plan to attend or phone in to participate in the quarterly meetings.
